Health and Safety policy
Brompton Movers Health and Safety Policy
Brompton Movers is committed to providing a safe and healthy working environment for our employees, contractors, customers, visitors, and members of the public who may be affected by our removal and relocation activities. This policy sets out our approach to managing health and safety risks associated with domestic and commercial removals, packing, loading, transportation, storage, and unloading.
Our Health and Safety Commitment
We aim to conduct all moving operations in a way that prevents injury, ill health, and damage to property. Health and safety are integral to the way we plan and deliver our services. Management at all levels will provide clear leadership, resources, and support to ensure high standards of safety are maintained and continuously improved.
We will comply with all relevant health and safety legislation and recognised industry best practice relating to manual handling, driving, use of equipment, and workplace conduct. Where standards can be improved beyond basic compliance, we will seek to do so in a practical and proportionate manner.
Roles and Responsibilities
Ultimate responsibility for health and safety rests with the senior management of Brompton Movers. They are responsible for ensuring that an effective safety management system is in place, regularly reviewed, and properly implemented across all operations.
Supervisors and team leaders are responsible for day-to-day monitoring of safe working practices on moves, including conducting pre-job checks, ensuring staff use the correct equipment, and addressing unsafe behaviour or conditions immediately.
All employees and contractors have a duty to take reasonable care of their own health and safety and that of others who may be affected by their actions. They must follow all safety instructions, use equipment correctly, report hazards or incidents promptly, and cooperate with any health and safety initiatives, training, or investigations.
Risk Assessment and Safe Work Planning
Brompton Movers will carry out regular risk assessments covering core activities such as manual handling of furniture and boxes, lifting of heavy or awkward items, use of trolleys and lifting aids, stair and corridor navigation, vehicle loading and unloading, and driving to and from customer locations. Site-specific risks, such as restricted access, uneven surfaces, or shared premises, will be assessed before or on arrival at the job.
Where risks are identified, we will implement appropriate control measures, which may include team lifting, use of mechanical aids, revised access routes, protective coverings for floors and surfaces, and the restriction of public access to loading areas. Staff involved in each move will be briefed on the key risks and the agreed safe work method before the job begins.
Manual Handling and Use of Equipment
Manual handling is a significant part of removal work and will be tightly controlled. Our teams will be trained in correct lifting and carrying techniques, posture, load assessment, and the avoidance of unnecessary strain. Loads will be assessed for weight, shape, and stability before being moved, and staff will not be required or permitted to lift items they consider unsafe.
We will provide suitable handling equipment, such as sack trucks, dollies, moving straps, furniture blankets, and ramp systems. This equipment will be maintained in good condition and used in accordance with training and instructions. Employees must not use damaged or defective equipment and must report any issues immediately.
Vehicle Safety and Driving
All vehicles used by Brompton Movers will be maintained in a safe and roadworthy condition, with regular inspections and servicing. Loads will be secured properly to prevent movement in transit and to protect both the team and customer property.
Drivers will hold the appropriate licences and will receive guidance on safe driving techniques, route planning, and the management of fatigue. They must comply with road traffic laws, speed limits, and parking restrictions, and must not drive when unfit to do so for any reason, including illness, medication, or fatigue.
Customer and Public Safety
During removals, we will take reasonable steps to protect customers, neighbours, visitors, and other members of the public. This may include setting clear walkways, managing access to loading areas, using warning signs where appropriate, and ensuring that doors, stairs, and lifts remain as safe and unobstructed as possible during work.
We will handle customer property with care to prevent damage or incidents caused by falling or unstable items. Any situation that presents a risk to customer safety will be reported to the supervisor and addressed immediately.
Training, Information, and Supervision
All new employees will receive an induction that includes our health and safety policy, safe working procedures, emergency arrangements, and incident reporting process. Ongoing training will be provided on manual handling, equipment use, vehicle safety, and any specialist tasks undertaken by our teams.
Information on hazards, procedures, and safety expectations will be communicated clearly through briefings, documents, and supervision. Work will be monitored to confirm that training is understood and that safe practices are consistently applied.
Incident Reporting and Emergency Procedures
All accidents, near misses, injuries, property damage, and dangerous occurrences must be reported as soon as possible. We will investigate incidents to understand root causes and to implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
Emergency procedures, including dealing with fire, serious injury, or other urgent hazards, will be communicated to staff and, where relevant, explained to customers at the time of the move. Employees must familiarise themselves with exits, assembly points, and emergency contacts for each work location.
Health, Welfare, and Fitness for Work
Brompton Movers recognises the importance of employee welfare in maintaining a safe working environment. We will encourage staff to report any health conditions, injuries, or concerns that may affect their ability to perform removal tasks safely. Where necessary, work will be adjusted, or medical advice sought to protect the individual and the team.
We will promote sensible working hours, adequate rest breaks, and safe hydration practices, especially during demanding or hot conditions, to reduce the risk of fatigue and heat-related issues.
Review and Continuous Improvement
This health and safety policy will be reviewed regularly and whenever there are significant changes to our operations, equipment, or relevant legislation. Feedback from employees and customers, along with lessons learned from incidents and audits, will be used to improve our safety management system.
By working together, Brompton Movers aims to maintain a culture where safety is a shared responsibility and an essential part of delivering reliable, professional removal services.
